IP telephony development and establishment

For today people use telephones either mobile or landline for different purposes. These purposes are not restricted with only communication – contemporary advanced smartphones provide users with numerous options beginning with Internet access and ending with photo making. IP telephony brazenly invaded in our world o communication and significantly changes our attitude to traditional telephony. IP telephony history shows how this technology had been established and what it had brought with itself. Business growth and clients’ satisfaction it is what has been changed with IP telephony emergence for the better.

IP telephony technology had been established at the end of 80-s of the last century. IP telephony discovery as professional technology was made by Israel company VocalTec, which managed till 1995 year to gather together all achievements in the sphere of Digital Sound Processing (DSP), codecs, computers and routing protocols. Starting with 1995 year two methods of sound compression for IP telephony came in handy – GSM and TrueSpeech from DSP Group Inc. company which provided high level of initial acoustic signal compression and nearly visible lose of quality while decompression. In addition to algorithms of speech compression/decompression and standard protocols IP telephony had always being improving the methods of how to eradicate Internet breaks.

Products for contemporary IP telephony give a great deal of functional possibilities and allow solving a lot of speech quality problems what in turn provides commercial attractive services growth. On the West – in European countries – and also in the USA this technology started to intensively be used approximately seven years ago.

The technology of telephone talk’s transmission (voice) via computer networks with the help of personal computer – IP telephony – had arisen in 1993 year due to the investigator Charley Kline from Illinois State University. He developed a program which transformed voice into digital code and transmitted it via Internet. The program was named Maven.

The same year simultaneously with Maven a second program CU-SeeMe was released and developed specially for Apple personal computers and with purpose to perform video connection (video conference).

In a year in 1994 April Maven and CU-SeeMe were used to transmit voice and video images during the flight of spacecraft Endeavor within a framework of NASA space program. At that time anyone who feels like it, connecting his computer to Internet, could see and hear space men. As a result those two programs were united under the same title of CU-SeeMe and were adopted to work on both Makintoch and IBM PC.

February 1995 is considered to a birthday of IP telephony. At that time Israel company VocalTec united all developments in the sphere of speech and video signal transmission via computer networks in Internet Phone program. A personal network of company servers was created and thousands of people who had personal computers with multimedia functions felt convenience and functional of new telephone connection.

In the same year other companies, who dealt with hardware and software production, having seen new perspectives of IP telephony, started developing similar networks and programs. So that in September new program DigiPhone developed by a small company from Dallas, Texas state, came in the market. It was so called cross-channel communication – possibility to simultaneously talk and see a person. Till that time the only person could talk.

Developers of new telephony connection found it not enough. In March 1996 two companies – well-known VocalTec and software manufacturer for IP telephony Dialogic company intended to adjust usual telephone apparatus to this new network. For this they used special gateways, named VocalTec Telephone Gateway (VTG), which was connecting digital channels with analogue telephone channels.

Due to the possibility to densify a connection channel the opportunity to connect up to 8 independent talking pairs has appeared. In two years the first IP telephony operators started to work in Asia. Further technology development allowed a company providing such a service as virtual IP PBX and now every curious person could organize personal telephone connection without buying physical equipment. It appeared to be very convenient for small and average companies.
